Last week, Ford debuted a sneak-peek of the new, mid-sized Ranger pickup. Normally a model doesn't see any major changes for 8-10 years, but this change comes early as the current model has only been available in the U.S for three model years. The new Ranger will first be released internationally and will arrive in the U.S. a short time later. It is expected to enter production soon in Taiwan and South Africa, and is potentially available as early as fall 2022.

Ford will likely offer several packages and trims. In North America there is an Fx4 package, and trims include the XL, XLT, Lariat, and Tremor. In addition, there is speculation that Ford may offer a Ranger Wildtrak for off-roaders as well.

The Ranger is just one of several overhauls of the Ford pickup lineup. Some other additions include the new compact pickup the Ford Maverick, as well as the 3rd-generation F-150 Raptor.

A Ranger Raptor is also anticipated to arrive in the U.S eventually. The Ranger Raptor may feature a twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6 engine. Additionally, it will feature extra ground clearance, flared fenders, and rugged tires while maintaining the frame of the regular Ranger.

What Changes are Coming to the Ranger?

Ford has some massive updates to the new Ranger. Overall, the 2023 Ranger is larger than the current model. Changes in wheelbase and track width will also improve the ride quality. Some of the new features include:

  • A multifunctional bed with racking and tie-down options
  • A workbench integrated into the tailgate
  • 110v outlets
  • C-shaped daytime running lights
  • LED strip headlights and grille similar to the F-150
  • Wireless charging pads
  • Large 10.1-inch vertical touchscreen infotainment center or 12.0-inch vertical touchscreen infotainment center
  • Additional cargo space in the doors and under the rear seats
  • 2-inch increase in wheelbase
  • 2-inch increase in track width
  • Sidestep behind the wheel arches

With such significant enhancements on this leading midsize pickup truck, you can expect an increase in the sticker price. The outgoing model Ranger is $25,285, but Ford has yet to announce the price of the 2023 Ranger.

What Will Remain On the Ranger?

The Ranger will keep its turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine. With this engine, drivers can anticipate 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The 10-speed automatic transmission will also remain. The suspension setup will mostly stay the same. The new Ranger is expected to have a 7500-pound tow capacity, which mirrors the current version.

While the Ranger has diesel options available on the global version, it is unlikely that the diesel Ranger will reach the U.S. The international version Ranger will possibly have the choice of three diesel engines rather than the two available now.

Will the 2023 Ford Ranger Be Competitive?

Overall, the outgoing Ford Ranger is a good pickup. The turbocharged engine paired with off-roading capabilities, good gas mileage, and towing and hauling capabilities makes it a sound choice for its class. However, it lags in rankings behind the Toyota Tacoma, Honda Ridgeline, and the relatively new to the scene Jeep Gladiator.

The Ranger also runs head to head with the Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Nissan Frontier. The many upgrades and the massive redesign will make the 2023 Ford Ranger even more competitive when up against other midsize trucks, which may take it higher in the rankings and into more driveways.

We will certainly be designing bumpers for the next-gen Ranger once we get our hands on one. You can check out our current line of Ranger Parts & Accessories to get an idea of what's to come for the 2023 model.
