2022 F-150 Lightning

There has been a lot of hype surrounding the all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning pickup truck, in addition to the other electric pickups coming to market in late 2021 and early 2022. Rivian's R1T and R1S will be hitting the streets before the lightning. As will the Cybertruck by Tesla who is the leader in the electric vehicle market, but could this be Ford's shot at taking over? Part of Ford's $22 billion electric vehicle plan which also includes the Mustang, and Transit van.

Ford broke ground at the all-electric facility in Dearborn Michigan in September 2020, where they will be focused only on manufacturing their electric vehicle line. The Lightning, Mustang and Transit electric vehicles will be made here. Ford stated that they have other electric vehicles in the works.

The Ford F-150 is the best selling pickup truck in America for 44 years and one might assume that their dominance will only grow stronger. Not only do they have their traditional line of F-150s, but now they've added their all-electric F-150 to serve both their traditional customers and bring in additional eco/gas mileage conscious truck buyers.

Powered by dual in-board motors, the F-150 Lightning boasts 563 horsepower and 775 lb.-ft. of torque. This is the highest torque ever for an F-150. 4x4 comes standard across all Lightning series models.

F-150 Lightning frame batteries and motors

The high strength aluminum alloy body sits on an all new frame built to accommodate the pouch cell batteries in between the frame rails. These are projected to yield a range of 230 miles, with the long-range version yielding 300 miles. The frame is made from the strongest steel ever used in an F-150 frame. And it's all riding on a newly developed independent rear suspension.

The truck bed is identical to the standard F-150 and carries a max payload of 2,000 pounds. The front trunk under the hood has 14.1 cubic feet of space and can carry an additional payload of up to 400 pounds bringing the total to 2400 pounds of payload. It has a solid towing capacity of 10,000 pounds.
